Sreepur is a village under Pandagaon union under Doarabazaar sub-district of Sunamganj district. The backswamp is in the west of the village and the SuramaRiver has encircled the village, this village was a hide-out of the freedom-fighters of Banshtala sub-sector. They would crossed the SuramaRiver and would do operation in the Sylhet-Sunamganj highway. The villagers would happily helped the freedom-fighters with shelter and food. It became a target of Pakistani army through information of the collaborators.
In 14 November, 1971, in the month of Ramadan helicopter of Pakistani army did a rackiecircling over the village. The camp of Pakistani army was in a hospital in Kaitak hospital over the Sylhet-Sunamganj highway. They started shelling over the village from there in the very early in the morning. On the other hand, the Pakistani army attacked the general people from of Sreepur village from the east of Chatak, coming along the Surama River. They have fired to the people of Panchashghar, Afsarnagar, Sreepur and Polirchar and set fire to the houses and shops. The women-men-old people-children were killed by the Pakistani bullet. The number is at least 11.
After raping 15-20 Muslim and Hindu women, they have set fire. Gulnahar and her infant child was killed here.
We have found a few witness to the massacre of that day. One described that a child was died along with the father in a bullet shot while she was on his father’s lap. The Pakistani army posed such atrocity on the general people of Sreepur village.
